Samsung Electronics declared that it has started the newest semiconductor fabrication line in Pyeongtaek and is set to invest USD 32.2 billion into its global production facilities by 2021, The Korea Herald reported on July 4. This new line will focus on producing Samsung’s 4G 64-layer V-NAND chips, reinforcing the company's capacity to produce leading-edge memory products. The 4G V-NAND can stack 64 layers of cells to store up to 256 gigabits of data. Compared to its predecessor 48-layer NAND chips, the 64-layer NAND chips can have a 30% increase in productivity. Since the IoT, artificial intelligence, big data and connected vehicles become recent buzzwords, there will be growing demand for 64-layer V-NAND chips. In response to such needs, Samsung plans to invest more than USD 32 billion to reshape its global production facilities by 2021.
